GIVE THEM AN IDEA AND THEY WILL RUN WITH IT !
Post Covid days have sent us all in a spin with activities,meetings and gatherings trying to make up for lost time; so it was impossible for us to find an opportunity to visit a real pumpkin patch to see the orange globes that the sun warms and the moon makes glisten in the night.
Instead, we each did our own selection, carving and dressing up.
Lynda visited the local Harwill farm sales depot where a manure spreader was heaped with different sized pumpkins. She said picking the perfect one was a shitty job.
Marybelle visited a North Perth farm stand as she wanted to support local. She was amazed at how many sizes and shapes there were, and of course she chose the lopsided white pumpkin so it would show up against her black witch’s costume.(Marybelle also got hers at Harwill but she neglected to say it was shitty pickin)
Later we found Bonnie had been to the same place for her choice (what a dirty bunch they are)
Willa walked up the road to where 4 home-schooled children grew pumpkins,squash and gourds for sale at the end of the driveway. She wanted one that was flattened on the one side so it would sit opposite to normal as she was planning to use the stem as the nose.
An afternoon was finally planned. We chortled as each pumpkin in all its glory arrived and sat upon the table.
Lynda’s was a large upright beautiful orange perfection. Her eyes and nose were carved stars and she decked it out with an autumn leaf halo. It will look great at night with a candle inside.Willa did relief carving for a grotesque face with the stem in the middle for a nose.She found relief carving tricky as you have to be careful not to punch right through. Hat with heavy cord hair,and scar completed that ensemble.
Marybelle’s white ghost pumpkin grinned like a Cheshire Cat, and wore colourful sunglasses which kept slipping up.
Bonnie was content To do appliqué rather than carving and put on WI sunglasses, a hat and gold hoop earrings. She will still be able to make pie with her pumpkin.
More fun and laughter was had as we donned Hallowe’en assortments for the picture- the ghosts half mask kept tilting; the fleece pj’s should have had a nightcap instead of a crooked straw hat; and the witch’s peaked hat blew off in the wind when she lost her broom flying over Minto so she said “abracadabra” and a fascinator appeared.The elegant W.I. Lady with her matching hat and scarf tried to look professional as she mingled with these other clowns.
So much fun with scavenger hunt clue#5-all these activities have tested the imagination of the group, and since so many institute members are “older” it goes to show that seniors can have just as much fun and nonsense as the younger generations.
