Prospecting for Gold

With the "OPEN" sign flashing, members of the Bethel Zion Zoomers converged on their favourite coffee shop in anticipation of finding a receptive customer to talk about Women's Institute. All this in order to meet the challenge of Clue #4 of the Women's Institute's Scavenger Hunt.

The Bethel Zion Zoomers love their WI, their branch, the founding purpose of the organization and all that it stands for. They wanted to inform and encourage interest in a member of the public. One of our team members had brought along a new resident of our community who is enjoying rural life and we wanted her to witness our discussion of WI with another customer in the coffee shop.

How lucky we were to see a young resident of our community walk in. With the offer of a coffee, here was someone who we might convince to listen and become interested in our organization. If we did a good job, she might one day join our branch.

Over coffee and a dessert there was local news exchanged, a bit of grandchildren bragging, and the topic of the day, "THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE". We shared WI's history and our community history as recorded in our Tweedsmuir books and chatted about how it still relates to our present lives today.

We discussed the memories and merits of 4H Clubs which were often led by WI members. We talked about supporting the "Christmas Sharing Programme" in our locale and canvassing for the Cancer Society each April and contributing to other worthwhile programmes in our community. We shared some of our past and current contributions to our community, such as lobbying for safety lights and markings at two dangerous intersections. It was informative to our neighbours, added information to the non-member of our WISH Team and a refresher course for the Zoomers themselves.

We're keeping our fingers crossed that we have made a good impression, and look forward to a possible member or maybe two in the future. Indeed they are actually both joining us for our first branch meeting in September.
