- WISH Clue #3 – Rock Painting Report:
Browns Happy Hunters gathered at the home of Katherine Grieve on June 4th for a little rock picking and painting event. Our chosen theme was, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and her Platinum Jubilee taking place this weekend. Her Majesty is the Honourary President of the Sandringham WI Branch in UK. Incidentally Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall, Anne, the Princess Royal, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex are all WI members.
Pictured are our painted creations: Michelle painted the Union Jack on her rock, Katherine painted one of the Queen’s sparkly brooches on a blue background, Nancy Habermehl painted the Queen’s cipher on a royal purple background, and I attempted a St. Edward’s Crown on a white background.
After our Royal Art session, Katherine treated us to High Tea. In addition to perfectly steeped tea, she served lovely tea biscuits (warm from the oven), delicious homemade marmalade (of course), strawberry jam, and fresh strawberries all topped off with whipped cream. It was delightful !! Thank you very much Katherine!!!
After ‘Tea’ we departed for home to hide our rocky treasures for our intended recipients.
We had a lovely time together and it was a splendid afternoon honouring the Queen in our own way !!
Katherine writes that she gave her stone to her Mother, and says: “ To us, she's a Queen! When I was little she faithfully cut every picture of any of the royals out of the paper and put it in a scrapbook for me -- it made the Queen and her family special to me because I knew they were special to her, and instilled in me a sense of their importance, but also a made me feel special because it was just for me.”
Michelle decided to keep her rock for herself at this time. She feels she needs to remind herself that she is important too as well as the others in her life. A ‘To Me From Me’ gift.
Nancy Habermehl gave her beautiful purple rock to her husband, just because she loves him.
My stone is dedicated, not given to my Maternal Grandmother and her sister, my Great Aunt because they passed away long ago now, and to my Mom, also now gone. Their quiet but ‘rock solid’ support of the Royal Family taught me the importance of the Royal Family and Monarchy to every member of the Commonwealth especially in times of turmoil such as during WW II. To my Grandparents generation, the British Royal Family were the superstars of the age, displaying family unity, sound moral values and they were the face of courage and steadfastness in England especially in wartime. My Grandmother organized a community quilt project in 1937, called the ‘Coronation Quilt’ in rural Essex County, ON, in honour of our Queen’s parents’ Coronation. I am now the proud owner of this beautiful family heirloom. My rock is in my garden by my back porch. - Notes
