From the Table to the ROSE
Our LEGO® creation charts the history of the Women’s Institute: from its inception at the signing of the Constitution, to the bringing together of women through ROSE.
In the presence of Colonel F.M. Carpenter, Mr. E.D. Smith, and Mr. Erland Lee, a group of women including Mrs. Janet Lee, Mrs. Carpenter, and Mrs. Smith formed a committee. They gathered around Mrs. Lee's walnut dining room table to draft the Constitution and By-laws for the newly formed Women’s Institute.
Mrs. Janet Lee wrote the Constitution for the first Women’s Institute in the world, by hand, on her dining room table. It was adopted on February 25, 1897. It is this momentous occasion that is depicted in the foreground of our LEGO® display.
The walnut dining room table was brought from Mrs. Lee’s family home in Ancaster, Ontario, having previously belonged to her grandfather, Mr. Robertson. This humble table remains on permanent display in the Erland Lee (Museum) Home.
The next one hundred years were remarkable and noteworthy: branches formed in Ontario, throughout Canada, in the United Kingdom and around the world. From the table, to the ROSE—
In 1997, the ROSE (Reaching Ontario Sharing Education) program was developed and implemented with the financial support of the Ontario Ministry of Health. ROSE sessions may include workshops, seminars, support groups, training and development, health fairs, and social awareness events.
With ongoing ROSE sessions, women continue to be empowered, which helps them better care for themselves, their families, and their communities. It is this togetherness and empowerment, under the flag of the Women's Institute, that is being showcased in the background of our LEGO® display.
