This Women’s Institute plaque is on a stone cairn that is situated on the corner of Calabogie Road, Anderson Road and Stewartville Road in the Township of McNab/Braeside, originally known as Lundys Corner.
The plaque reads “On this site stood the first school of Section 13 McNab built in 1868”.
In 1967 the Glasgow Women’s Institute decided as a centennial project they would look into the possibility of erecting a cairn to commemorate the place where the first school at Lundys Corner was built.
The school bell was given to the Glasgow Women’s Institute so it could be put on the top of the cairn. In 1968 the cairn was completed and a dedication was held. Eight pupils who attended the school were in attendance as well as many others from the community. The total cost of the plaque was $82.32.
The bell is now back at the same location it stated where it once rang out to call the children to class.
In 2015 to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Glasgow Women’s Institute, the school bell was refurbished by sandblasting and repainting it.
This plaque reflects the Glasgow Women’s Institutes desire to preserve the history of its community and is just one example of the extraordinary WI treasurers you can find when touring our beautiful community.
