- The beginning of our W.I.S.H. adventure befittingly brought us to the Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead where Adelaide’s life journey began. This National Historic Site owned by the Federated Women’s Institute of Canada is located on Blue Lake Rd. in St. George, Ontario.
Adelaide’s early years on the homestead learning from her hard working and determined mother laid the foundation for her to become a strong leader and advocate for change. After Adelaide married, her youngest son passed away; this inspired her to promote the importance of domestic science education, largely advocating for the pasteurization of milk. Adelaide wanted to ensure other children did not suffer the same tragedy as her own son. Her many public speaking engagements lead Adelaide to become the honorary president at the inaugural meeting of the Women’s Institute.
Our Crafty Clue Crew felt pasteurized milk and the fundamental years Adelaide spent on the homestead to be the perfect starting point for our W.I.S.H. adventure. These were what ultimately led Adelaide to carve a path of education and change for women across the world. - Notes
