Dazzling Women of Interest
WI Scavenger Hunt- Clue #1, Feb. 2022.
Intro- It has been quite a start to the Scavenger for our group. The Mail out arrived after our Dec. Meet. The Lockdown prior to our Jan. Meet. We Scavenged up a few members and managed to make 2 teams.
Consultation with team members revealed knowledge of local WI signage as being a common theme for us. Turns out that our non-WI member is the creator of one of the signs and had contacts to locate a missing District Road sign. Two others had signs in Storage.
Krista's Story: by Krista Rosborough.
Well, about 18 years ago I was approached by a Women's Institute Member (Joan) to create an outdoor sign for her and some friends of the Demorestville Group. I happen to be wood worker and crafter so I created 10 signs that were given to various members at the time. The sign pictured with this contest needs some freshening up, which is my new project and to try and get some more created for the same group, just some new members are interested in receiving one. (Grey, used to be blue, sign is held by Trudy on the left).
Brenda's Story: by Brenda DeCastris
This sign had belonged to a long-time, very dedicated member of the Prince Edward District Branch that I first belonged to. When that member passed away her family donated all her WI memorabilia to the Branch. We held an in-branch auction of those items and the money raised went toward Pennies for Friendship. I was lucky enough to get this sign which is usually displayed outside my home. (Blue & white sign held by Brenda on the right).
Trudy's Story: as related to Lorie by Trudy
I believe it was our 85th Branch Anniversary and Joan contacted a person to make some personal lawn signs. There were 10 made at the time and distributed to Branch members and the District President at the time. I have one here in my porch, but it needs some attention & paint. ( Again held by owner Trudy, on the left).
Lorie's Story: by Lorene Grier
As Team Leader and a newer member of the Branch I contacted Trudy, a long time member, when she told me her story she had no idea that Krista had been invited to be a team member. Someone recalled the large Service Group Billboard Sign at County Rd. 49 which had disappeared some time ago. Krista, our researcher, contacted our local Councillor. He contacted the County Yards. Within a day or two I had an email that we could come & pick up the Women's Institute section of the Billboard at the front desk! Brenda, Trudy & I recovered it and promptly took it to Krista's Home for another couple of pics. Krista having some mobility challenges will not always be on site for pics. (Large Centre sign with our Logo, held by Krista (L) & Lorie (R))
For my part, I challenged memories of several County WI ladies and have found the history of the billboard sign. It can be found on the FWIO website.
But: In the late 1990”s Joyce Brown of Hillier, as the Public Relation's Officer of PEC District initiated a project to erect Service Organization Billboards on the Main Highway Accesses to PEC.
Groups were contacted, Monies collected and 3 Large Billboards were erected about Oct. 2000. The Hwy. 49 sign had gone missing . We found out it was deteriorating. Our Demorestville Branch are now the proud holders of the WI segment of the billboard. But I did find out that district has been looking for the billboard to be replaced. We may not have it long!
In Summary: The Dazzling women of Interest have certainly managed to Hunt and Scavenge some Signage of Interest, in our Township. Our first shot with this Clue has not been Dazzling but it has certainly been Fun, Interesting and Informative.
