DUNROBIN AND WOODLAWN POST OFFICE Memories of a small girl, listening to people talking about the post office. She can remember hearing when J.J. Younghusband was Post Master and Beatty Younghusband was delivering the mail that they use to deliver on Christmas Day . in the late 1920's. Ellen Delahunt can also remember standing in the back of the car during the summer while her father, living Younghusband delivered the mail to about 30 families in the late 1940's. Beatty Younghusband would use the horse and cutter during the winter. Mrs. Irving Younghusband (Edna) became Post Master in 1963 after Myrtle Younghusband officially retired. Even though Myrtle retired she helped Ada Younghusband and Edna Younghusband sort the moming mail and they seemed to know who were living in sin. Myrtle and Ada lived in the same building; as the Post Office which was located in the back comer of the Younghusband’s General Store. In 1979 or 1980 the Post Office moved back into an extra room off the back corner to give more room in the store This room was larger and was put to good use as the population of the area had grown to about 1060 persons in 1979. This Post Office had the sorting boxes and a large safe with the J J .Younghusband name on it. This Safe stored all the money, stamps and other supplies. (This safe was sold the Mark Baskin in 1987) After Edna Younghusband died, her daughter Ellen Delahunt took over as Post Mistress. The continuation of the mail and grocery deliveries were made in one vehicle.. Early in the morning you could phone in your order and it would be delivered with the mal Wouldn't you say this was great for the customers. The rural driver's salary was not very good but with the groceries it made it worthwhile. The salaries were never good until the unions came in. In the early 1980's the Post Mistress earned approx. $400. per month and the KR. ft1 driver's contract earned about $4800 a year .From this amount the driver had to pay for his gas, repairs and car. The Rural mail drivers never missed delivering due to the weather. They had chains, sand and a shovel and helped other in distress. Normal hours for the Post Office were 8 to 6 PM. However if you missed picking up your mail in the evening you would maybe get gas in the morning and run in, buy stamps or get your mail as early as 6:30 AM. This was great customer service. Saturday rural mail delivery ceased in June 1982. . Younghusband's General Store was sold to Mr. Bob Ritchie in 1985 and Ellen Ddahunt continued as the Post Mistress in the back comer of the store This was a
