Among the early surgeons who came to this area was Dr. Anson Heyden who settled " in Thurlow, back of Belleville, after staying a while at the front". This was sometime prior to 1817. Althougl he had studied medicine in New York, Dr. Heyden failed to obtain a diploma from the Upper Canada Medical Board. Nevertheless, like a good many other pioneer surgeons who lacked certification he enjoyed a good practice. For a time he was the only doctor in Thurlow township. For many years the place where he lived was known as Heyden's Corners. The name was later changed to Corbyville. Dr. Heyden was clerk of the township. In 1837 he was reported to be taking sides with the Rebels. His sympathy with them cost him his job for it placed him in bad standing with the officials of the country and he was forced to escape. It is said that his wife refused to hand over the township records. P.S.- Part of this was taken from a newspaper account - in the over 50 years ago notes â€" the remainder from the atlas. Luella M. Sills, Curator.
