SnOW'Village The locality around the Bethel-Zion Church on the 9th Concession was at one time known as Snow Village. The origin of this name is unknown. An old Canada Directory lists this Village in 1857 as having a pOpulation of about 100. Among those listed as residents were Samuel J. P. Casey, Post master and store keeper; D. Ham. councillor; George Phillips, Justice of Peace; John Phillips. and Rev. William Sills, J. P. and School Superintendant. The name of the village was later changed to Phillipston because of the many families located on the concession bearing the name of Phillips. Older residents can recall a post office located in the home of George Phillips With MTo Phillips the post master, later Ridley Phillips, grandson of George Phillips,acted as post master for a short time at the same location - Lot 20 - where Lee Ketcheson now lives. The post office was changed to a small house just south of the church and a Mrs. Thrasher was the P05t miStreSS- The mail was brought from Latta to the post office three days a week by mr. William Henry Sills. At this time there was no store and Mr. Sills often obliged by delivering some groceries as well as mail. The "Forresters" erected a lodge room on the north east corner across from the Church but abOUt 1930 this was sold and the building was taken down. On this same corner was a blacksmith shop. Over the blacksmith shop Mrs. William Henry Sills ran a weaving business supplying carpets and clothing. A Carriage Shop stood just south of the school operated by . There was also two homes on each side of the school. Today only one of the houses remains and is occupied by Mrs. Glen Ish, A blacksmith shop was also located south of the post office and the blacksmith's name was Sharpe. It seems that blacksmith shops were as numerous as gas stations are in our present time. The foregoing gives an idea of the many homes around the community in early times.
