What is the programme of the Women's Institute? The Women's Institute is popularly known as "The Rural Woman's Univer-- sity". Programmes of a cultural, educa- tional and social nature are provided. Our activities include the fields of'Agri-- culture and Canadian Industries, Citizen-- . ship and Education, Community Activities and Public Relations, Historical Research and Current Events, Home Economics and Health and Resolutions. Through co--operation'with the Women's Institute Branch, Home Economics exten- sion courses are conducted for women and girls of rural Ontario. How do the Women's Institutes assist in the development of rural youth? (1) By providing 5 yearly scholarships for girls entering the four year degree course in Home Economics at the Mac- donald Institute, Guelph. (2) By establishing Scholarship Funds for girls in Homemaking Clubs. These awards will enable the girls to take short courses at educational or agricultural centres. ' (3) By sponsoring cultural community activities such as festivals, public speaking contests, community recreation, community beautification, etc. How do Women's Institutes raise the stan- dards of rural living? 1. By Provincial Conferences--delegates coming together from areas, districts and branches to study and discuSs pertinent questions. 2. By the writing of Tweedsmuir His- tories. These are authentic; records of the history of the community from earliest times. Each Branch Institute is encouraged to compile these records and keep them up-to--date. 3. By promoting the Health of the Pub- lic in every way, SUCh as: (a) co-operating with local social agencies. (b) instigating necessary health meas- ures--health units, clinics of various kinds, hospitals, homes for the aged, etc. . 4. By promoting needed community pro- jects, such as : community centres, ball diamonds, skating rinks, parks, rest rooms etc. I 5. By encouraging worthwhile cultural activities, such as: music festivals, drama clubs, public speaking contest, etc. 6. By constructive interest in local schools, doing everything possible to meet the needs of teacher and pupils. 7. By a Summer Holiday for Institute members the second week in July at On-- tario Agricultural College, Guelph, with rest, relaxation and participation in a worthwhile programme. 8. By welcoming, in many ways, the New Canadians who settle in our midst. 9. By promoting world unity and inter- national understanding whenever and wherever possible. (a) friendly contact with members from sister organiations. (b) letter friendships with members of other countries. (c) study and discussion of specific world problems, (d) giving encouragement and support' to organizations attempting to satis-- fy world needs, such as: United Nations, F.A.O., etc. Our organization of rural women is vital and alive--Juterested in home, com- munity and world betterment and worthy of your interest and support.
