i l i Island Groups Elect New President RICHARDS LANDING -- The work of the branches compos- mg St. Joseph Island District of the Women's Institute was re- viewsd at the annual meeting Tuesday in the Maurice Brun- sidc Memorial Hall. All branch- cs were represented. Gun=t speakm's during the sessions were Mrs. J. McVittie. Hilton Beach, conference repre- sentative: Laura Phippcn, homemakin: club director: and Mrs. L. Trivcrs. Thessalon, board membar. - Mrs. McVittie in giving her report of the Guelph Conference detailed the duties of the public elations officer of each district and branch. This newly set-up department touches on the work of all departments. Laura Phippen, director of homem king clubs. compliment- ed the Island group on their in- terest in this department. "This year marks the 25th an- niversa'v of the foundinz of homema in: clubs." Miss Phio. pen said. "'T'hsre are 21 clubs in Algoma. five times the num- ber there were in 1953, St. Jos- eph Island has three out of four branches soonsoring' clubs. which is an extremely high av- erage." Miss Phippen mentioned a recent survey of farm homes and home-making, as revealing some surprising facts. About 80 per cent of farm homes still use raw milk, in spite of the ed~ . Mu... , .. MRS. r. Miss Phippen said the survey showed that some 84 per cent of farm tractors were operated by children -- 50 per cent of them under 12 years of age. Mrs. L.
