LORD AND LADY TWEEDSMUIR_ Lord Tweedsmuir with his Lady presided as Governor General of Canada from 1935 to 1940. Even before his appointment he was well known to Canadians as John Buchan, writer of biographies, historical works and adventure novels. Before coming to Canada he had been called to the Bar in 1901 and had represented the Scottish Universities as a member of the British House of Commons from 1927 to 1935. In 1935 he was titled "Baron Tweedsmui'rY". "Memory hold the Door " was his autobiography and one of his latest works. He died in Montreal on February llth, 1940. His library was bequeathed to Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. Lady Tweedsmuir has written many plays, children's books and reminiscences. Before coming to Canada she had been an ardent W.I. member in England. During her years at Rideau Hall the Women's Institute movement was encouraged and inspired by her interest in their programs. This generous lady, donated silver trophies as prizes for contests in crafts and essays. She was made an Honourary Life Member of F. W.I.O. One of her most lasting contributions to W.I. work was a suggestion that each group across Canada should collect and mount materials pertinent to the early pioneer history of their local community, before it has drifted into a forgotten past. In her honour these books were called "Tweedsmuir Histories". Following the death of her husband, she returned to England, and is still residing there in 1962. N
