TEESWATER, 0m, 19$ 5 Teeswater Creamery, the first established creamery in Ontario and the second in Canada, commenced operations in 1875 by Hr. Inglis. When beginning operations, Teeswater Creamery received milk from 120 cows. At an average of 21 pounds per cow per day, this meant a total of about 2,500 pounds, sufficient milk to manufacture 71 pounds of butter daily. Milk was paid for at the rate of 7 cents per gallon for May and June, 6 cents for July and August and then 7 cents until November 10. The factory operated from lhy 10 until Novemher 10. The milk was put into vats, cooled and then the cream was skimmed off the top. The cream was made into butter and the skim milk into skim milk cheese. The butter sold at 25¢ a pound which was 8% higher than the l7ï¬ which farm made or dairy butter sold at. In 1878, 3 years after the Teeswater factory opened, Mr. Inglis engaged an agent in England to handle the butter. The butter was shipped to England. I believe that it was the first butter errorted from Canada to England. Within 6 years of the opening of the Teesweter Butter rectory h other factories had started up within 20 miles.
