‘12 .BWFL ALL-STAR GAME North edges South ’ By Jim Brown Advance-Times Staff HARRISTON - The Bluewater Fastball League held its All-star game Saturday evening in i'larriston. The North division pre- vailed 2-1 in the well- played contest. All the runs were scored on account of the long ball. Two of the 11 teams did not send representatives due to other commit- ments. The Chepstow Lang Farm Colts were competing in the provin- cial qualifying midget tournament in St, Thomas and the Port Elgin Blue Devils were in the Owen Sound tournament. The South division. com- prised of players [mm the Wroxeter Junior Rippers. the Wroxeter Rippers. the Wingham Colts. the Harriston Mercurys and the Mount Forest Selects had 11 players on their roster. The North division, com- prised ot players from the Belmore Stingers, the Formosa Brewers. the Chepstow Cubs and the Chepstow Aces. had 12 players in their line-up. Originally scheduled as a nine-inning contest. the All~star was a seven- inning affair us each team only had two pitchers. Trevor Soip of the Rippers started on the mound for the South divi- sion and Scott Smith of the Stingers started for the North division. Scott Leinhart of the Mercurys took over in the fourth inning for the South while veteran Pete Spitzig ï¬nished the contest for the North. Smith got the first two batters. Dennis Wintemute and Trevor Seip of the Rippers. to ground out. After giving up a. single to Ryan Fisk or the Mercurys. Smith struck out Harriston's Geotl Gunson, Seip also faced four bat- ters in the bottom half of the inning. After giving up a lead off single to Stacey Bauman of the Cubs. Seip fanned Matt Smith of the Cubs and Doug Lang of the Aces and Scott Smith grounded out, The top of the second was a three-up. three- down inning for Smith. Tom Lang of the Aces led off the bottom half of the inning with a single. He was advanced to sec- ond on a sacriï¬ce bunt by Dave Deyeli or the Stingers. A walk to Eric Millen oi' the Brewers put runners on first and second. Fortunately, Seip got CliiT Cassidy ol’ the Cubs and Mark Kuntz of the Brewers to fly out. Smith only faced four batters in the top of the third. Scott West of the Colts was the only batter reaching base. receiving a free pass with two out. Brent Reading of the Aces lead off the bottom of the third with a single. Robb Hammell of the Stingers then came to the plate and smacked the ball over the centre field fence to give the North at 2-0 lead. With Spiing now on the mound for the North. Wintemute led otl' the top of the fourth with a solo shot over the centre ï¬eld fence to cut the North divi- sion lead in half. Leinhart took over for the South division. Neither team threatened until the top of the sev- enth, when Hammell led off With a single and reached third on a twoâ€"out double by Matt Smith. Leinhart struck out Doug Lang to conclude the game.
