(â€"v BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL CLUB HOLDS INTERNATION NIGHT tit******$**************Â¥*****$**##*******t**t*t*t***t The february meeting of the local B and PW Club took on an international flavour on Monday evening last. The meeting took place at the Madawaska Hotel. Floral decorations, place cards and other table arrangements wereEmost taste- fully and effectively done by Miss Jean Graham. The head table had a colourful centro- piece of flags of the United Nations with spring flowers at either and. Other tables had yellow mums for centres. Interesting favours were found at each place. The meeting was in charge of the president, Miss Eva Brown. The head table guests were piped in by Pipe Major Roy Slievert. All were welcomes by the president, and meeting opened with Club Grace and *0 Canada". The International candle lighting service was in charge of Miss Muriel Hanson and Mrs. Viola Sullivan and was most effective. As down through the years new clubs be- came a part of the great International B and PW Club, a candle was lighted until in conclusion candles were lighted representing countries all around the world, the last Japan, who joined in December of 1958. Miss Enright introduced the guest speaker, the Hon. Francis Cumming-Bruce, Deputy High Commissioner of the United Kingdom in Ottawa. His address was entitled 'Awakening of Africa and its challenge to the West". Mr. Cummings-Bruce said he had come to this McNab country from the Highlands of Scotland. He recalled the story of his great grandfather, Lord Elgin, who was instru- mental in having the capital moved from Montreal to Ottawa. He said he noticed the B and PW stretched around the world which makes it necessary for governments to recognize this fact. we live in a world of tensiveness, not knowing what dangers lie ahead. Many of us who are in the inner circle feel a major war is not likely to break out at the pre- sent time, but minor wars are a certainty. In Asia is found the greatest danger where there are some thirteen centres of acute danger. Africa has been asleep for many centuries and only penetrated by Western man 100 years ago. Africa is like a great giant awakening and will not go to sleep again. He said. "There are five separate regions in Africa - each has its own danger. West Africa has made amazing progress in the last 50 years. Ghana is an example of the problems of working with this young giant. Of the school for the blind at Akrapong he said splendid people run this school. It houses small children and even some of twenty years who love the school so much they asked to stay. He expressed his pleasure that the local B and PW Club had made dona- tions to this school. How can we in Canada help Africa? The people of Africa will listen to Canada be- cause Canada is generous. What could Arnprior do to cement this feeling of friendship? They could invite African students to their homes for a weekend from Carleton College. This means much to the students and would be a personal tie with Africa because as these students return home, they would become ambassadors of Canadian good-will. After opposing it for some time, Ghana finally agreed to establish a Russian Diplomatic mission in Africa. The West African is a fine type of man - emotional, but with his feet on the gen round. g Mr. Cummingâ€"Bruce concluded with this comparison - Just as the white keys and the black keys on the piano are necessary to produce harmony, so the white and black people must co-operate to fulfil God's purpose here on earth. Mr. Cumming-Bruce was thanked by Mrs. Vera Bedore and Mrs. Mary Lewis made a presentation. Greetings from the Renfrew B and PW were brought by their president, Mrs.Miller. The courtesy report was given by Mrs. Peg Frieday. A most enjoyable and informative meeting was brought to a close by repeating the Business and Professional Women's creed.
