Reducing Weeds in Lawns With- out Chemicals University of Guelph Environmental Bi- ologist Chris Hall says homeowners can keep a weed-free lawn without using chemical herbicides. but it takes a bit of planning and commitment. In a ï¬ve-year study completed at the Cambridge Research Station. Hall found that seeding lawns with perennial ryeâ€" grass and using a speciï¬c fertilizing regimen are the most effective ways of keeping weeds at bay without spraying. Ryegrass germiâ€" nates and establishes more quickly than other popular grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues. Regular applicationsofnitrogen also help ensure a dense. healthy stand of turf that has acompetitivc advantage over weeds. Artifacts : his Canadian made washing ma- chine, circa 1879. is located in the kitchen of the Lee Home. The wooden machine is an improved model made by the Farline Company. The vigorous scrubbing of clothes against a wash- board was no longer necessary. Instead. the housewife had only to turn the side handle, vigorously. in circles to bring the clothes upward against the washboard. The artifact was purchased by the Lee Committee in 1974.
