Durham West This anch has donated funds towards the installation of a Pro-Lift Elevator to make their community centre accessible to seniors and disabled individuals, Hawkestone WI, Sirncoe Kempenfeldt This anch can boast three new members in one year. Some of the recent events in- cluded: a tea and penny draw, with money going to the Headquarters Fund: quilting classes; an auction, with proceeds to Pennies for Friendship; and. a potluck dinner. Leitrim WI, Carleton East To mark the International Year ofthe Fam- ily, this Branch sponsored an essay contest for Grade 8 Blossom Park students. Jason Baird won the $I00 first prize; Heidi Hope and Matthew Bondy finished second and third. Welland West and East Districts These two Districts have had several Edu- cation Committee workshops this year. A breadamaking demonstration showed mem» bers how to make a variety of bread from one basic recipe. Another workshop left mem- bers thrilled with their battenburg lace accomplishments. And a recent workshop on breast health acquainted the local women with the latest advances in breast care. North Sunshine WI, Temiskaming South This Branch has been busy fund raising for a number of local projects. including: the refurbishing ofthe Classic Theatre in Cobalt; the purchasing of two tables for an Extended Care facility; the supporting of Camp Qualâ€" ity; the purchasing ot‘a wheelchair for one of their members; and, the planting of a WI flower garden in their community. Avonmore WI, Stormont The Avonmore WI donated an ear ther- mometer to the local medical clinic as one of their International Year of the Family pro- jects. Dr. D. Ducas and Dr. M. Smar of the Roxborough Medical Centre accepted the thermometer from Irene McIntyre. has; IVlinesing WI, Simcoe Centre This Branch participated in the 22nd An- nual Minifest Parade to promote the Women's Institute in the area. Six members dressed as monkeys and carried a banner, with the 1995 program theme Communicate. along the parade route. Following the events, a meal was served raising $500 to be donated to the Minesing Community Centre building project. Grandview WI, Lennox-Addington A long-time member of this Branch, Mary Scott. was honoured by Grandview members forher years ofWI involvement. She remains an active member - planning programs, tak- ing a lively interest in current issues, and helping out at community functions. Her fel- low members remarked that she is “an inspiration to women everywhere." Britton WI, Perth North One member from this Branch, Marcie Johnston. organized a special service at her church highlighting the Women's Institutes and the Associated Country Women of the World. The February Service was to coincid with the ACWW Conference held in Nex‘l Zealand. Several members of the congrega» tion. who were also WI members. assisted in leading the service. Waldemar WI, Dufierin South This Branch has been busy making a quilt to raise money forcommunity projects.T'rckâ€" ets are on sale and the draw will be made at the Grand Valley Fair this September. Clute WI, Cochrane Each year, this Branch raises money by either raffling or selling a quilt made by its members. Purple Valley WI, Bruce North The biggest project this Branch tackles each year is the local Maple Syrup Festival, held on Easter Saturday. The Festival was spearheaded by Branch member Olive Burt and has been ongoing since 1968. Beginning in June, they are planning to work on their local history as a group project.
