Dr. Nix is a graduate of the University Of Manitoba where she taught school and helped establish hospitals in rural communities. She is now a professor of Behavioural Sciences at Pace College, Graduate School of Administraâ€" tion, New York City. On that February day at Harcourt Memoâ€" rial Church in Guelph, Ontario one hundred and fifty women listened with complete attenâ€" tion as Dr. Nix led the discussions, gave inforâ€" mation and answered questions on the subject, “Family and Community Relations". Miss Jean Scott, Supervisor of JuniOr Exten- sion for the Home Economics Branch of the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food. opened the day’s program and introduced the speaker. The day's topic was introduced by Dr. Nix by dividing the ladies into groups of approximately ten each. The groups were asked to discuss among themselves the ques- tion “What are the chief problems that we as leaders, mothers, teachers, etc. have to con- front in rural areas now and up to year 2000?" Some of the problems discussed were lack of family and community life caused by out- side influences, industrial expansion and pollu- tion. educational systems for changing society, survival of small farms, etc. Throughout the day. Dr. Nix captivated her audience with her wit. but with the wit the laâ€" dies were given ideas for deep thinking. Dr. Nix said. “With release of time from the physical burden of work we must put our good brains to work and fight from knowledge, not emotion, and work as teammates to help solve problems. The whole point in the business of teaching children is starting where they are with the things they al- ready know," Dr. Nix strongly advocates achievement for achievement's sake. rather than competition, recognizing that development is achievement. that successful experiences encourage people to Strive for greater success. in closing the program.
